JET MAGAZINE: BLACK MEN WED

jet216x9Jet Magazine is known for many things such as being a historical magazine, beauty of the week, and the wedding section. For decades the weeding section has displayed love of black newly weds, no matter their age or economic background. However, in this newest issue of Jet you will see the “New Normal.” As we become more consciously aware of what love is and that as a society we don’t have the right to judge people on how they found love or with whom they fell, it seems very appropriate that Ravi Perry and Paris Prince are included in Jet’s wedding section. The couple married in August at their home in Worcester, Mass. Jet is indeed pushing the envelope for it’s more conservative readers but that didn’t make them shy away from the growing population of people who is welcoming marriage for what it is and not a male/ female privilege.

This is not Jet’s first time featuring a same sex marriage, as last year they featured its first lesbian wedding (Nyema Vernon and Tenika Jackson).

“Jet magazine has an extensive legacy of covering the lives of LGBT African-Americans,” said GLAAD president Herndon Graddick in the press release. “This is yet another opportunity to applaud Jet magazine for continuing to highlight the diversity of the African-American community and to urge other media outlets to recognize that it’s these stories that help grow acceptance of our community and give a voice to LGBT people of color who are too often invisible in the media.” (Jet Magazine)

Out of curiosity I looked up the definition to Marriage to see if it now reflects the sign of our times, this is what I found…Progress!

a (1) : the state of being united to a person of the opposite sex as husband or wife in a consensual and contractual relationship recognized by law (2) : the state of being united to a person of the same sex in a relationship like that of a traditional marriage (Merriam-Webster.com)
